Monopoli & Egnazia
A journey through time to discover ancient Roman roads and historic fortifications along the Apulian Adriatic coast. We will start the day with a visit to Monopoli, a seaside town surrounded by imposing medieval walls. Walking through the historic center, we will explore its 99 contrade, an intricate maze of alleyways and piazzette rich in history. We will admire the great fortified gate, part of Castello Carlo V, and visit the hypogeum area of the Cathedral, where ancient Roman tombs are still visible.
We will then proceed to the Archaeological Park of Egnazia, an extraordinary site that preserves the remains of an ancient Roman city. We will walk along the Via Traiana, one of the main commercial roads of the era, where you can still see the ruts left by carts on the stones. We will discover the 7-meter-high defensive walls, the ruins of Roman dwellings, and the Acropolis, which dominates the landscape with a breathtaking view of the sea.
The experience will conclude with an aperitif by the sea, along the walls of Monopoli, where we will taste four fine wines from historic Apulian wineries. A sommelier will guide us through a sensory tasting, pairing each wine with a local specialty.
